When I read your post here, it is so familiar. The way you dress, you talk, you present, and how to handle yourself in all ocassions will sum up as your image in the public. Due to the oriential upbring, Chinese usaully look too humble in US. Western protocols are so different from oriential protocols .In general, it takes us a while to aware the subtle difference amongs these rules and find out which way is more proper to behave in specific sitution. In the past I thought I was pretty confident, but my boss still several times pointed out " You are lack of confidence and ambition, you should feel and talk as you are the best in your field. I want you be able to teach me and try to persuade me with your own ideas toughly." In front of that world known person, I try to be humble , but in American way it is not self-conciuous.Then I recognize it is the preception difference.
About the communication," How good your English are, how successful you will be". For 99% Chinese native speakers,I believe it is a huge challenge. My langauge clinic instructor told me if you came to this country after 12 , more or less you would have your mother tongue accent in Spoken English, but you still could commuicate effectively. Sometimes we feel awkward druing commucaitons not because we can't speak fluent English, but because we lack of the background, it is quite hard for us to give a proper response to that topic.
