trying to explain why now China is behind many other countries; we try to find reasons in our food and culture. And I pointed out that system is the main reason why a country lags behind.
As I said, system is related to culture -- weakly, but culture is not the foundation of the system. Another example: Canada and the USA share the same culture (same cultural origines), but they have very different systems and they have very different results.
The previous posts seem to have some confusion about culture and civilization, though. Civilization is more tangible, visible, and more materialized. It's the artifact of a people's action/work in time of many years or centuries. While culture is more ideological and behavioral, and more dynamic. Civilizatation can be advanced or not, culture cannot be evaluated. We cannot say a culture is good or bad.
As you said, system can be changed in a relatively short time while culture cannot. That's exactly why China can still be a very economically (or millitariy if it wants) powerful nation by changing its system while still maintaining its culture.
On a side note, in my opinion the Chinese culture is in change. My definition of culture is "the value system of a group of people in a certain period of history, and their behavior based on that value system, including the patterns of their perception, interaction, and feeling." Based on that definition i think the Chinese culture is changing, rapidly. Whether that's good or bad is a different question that I would like to talk about some other time -- if I can find the time, but I do want to point out, that China lost its golden opportunity to build up a very WEALTHY AND HEALTHY country over 20 years ago when it first started its "reform" -- hope I can come back to revisit this topic later.
