1) what do you need it for?
(do you travel a lot and
shoot mainly outdoor mountain...sea/river/lake scenes and intend with somewhat more serious works?
or do you just want to record whatever for memories?
or do you intend to mostly go around cities and shoot people?
...)
this may vary your needs on the zoom part and the shutter speeds.
lenz go to be good in any case
2) what price range would be budget?
(i would not spend too much just to get all gimics, some of the spec would go lagged behind in no time. so basically i would spend my dollars on what i need and i care for, so i could update my cameras more frequently on the features i would need...)
3) how serious are you about digital pictures?
if you think this would kill most of your spare time as a serious hobby, than chances are every two years or so (at least) you would need a new camera for updated features
if you just want something handy, you may stick with it for much longer...

thus, wanna gimme the above before anyone could recommnd specific models?
